Race Report: Clermont Clay 5k

The Clermont Clay 5k and 15k take place on the Clermont Clay Loop, a roughly 10-plus mile series of clay roads through some central Florida groves and fields.  This is likely the last time that the race will include the full 15k of clay since some of it is slated to be paved for development.  I wasn't feeling up to the 15k so I decided to sign up for the 5k.

It is a long way to Clermont from Tampa.  A small group of us carpooled up for almost hour and a half drive.  There was race day packet pickup so we wanted to leave enough time for that, parking, and warming up.  It was in the upper 50s with very low humidity.  Overall a chilly day for central Florida.  I was able to do a quick warm up and went out to run my own race.

The race went pretty well.  It was a small field but the weather was perfect.  The route is just out and back along the clay road.  There are several rolling hills.  I found myself in the top 10 all race, finishing 7th overall.   I was one of the top one or two adults in the race as there were a number of middle and high school X-Country runners.

Overall, my time was 21:24.  Not my best but also not bad considering little training and the rolling hills that I am not used to running.  The medal was good as it had a small vial of clay attached to it.  The clay is commemorative of the loop.  That's a nice touch for the race.  I may head back out there for some training in the next year as there are plenty of clay areas even if they develop a section.  The softer surface felt good under foot.
